HR budgets - Challenge of doing more with less

We like this article from HR Magazine by David Woods.

While one survey shows HR job vacancies rising faster than in any other sector, another finds HRDs worried that budget cuts will limit their ability to invest in HR and talent.

The importance of employee engagement

We like this article we found in People Management magazine about the importance of employee engagement.

Within the competitive world of management ideas, employee engagement is emerging as the master key that unlocks performance. Successive research exercises over the past five or six years, including a large amount of work sponsored by the CIPD, have shown that without engagement, all the clever HR policies in the world, let alone investment in technology, marketing and innovation, will fail to deliver sustained competitive advantage.

Survival of the fittest

“The credit crunch is a personal trainer - are we as good as we can be?”Tom Crawford, E-on - May 2009

We always look for the silver lining in every situation, and remain positive no matter what is going on. And the credit crunch is no different. One of the positive aspects of the recession is that only the best are good enough; so people are ‘upping their game’, improving their services, enhancing their added value, and ultimately becoming better places to work. Or they should be.

We believe that companies should be doing more, not less, so that they not only survive the crunch and come out the other side stronger and ready to ‘clean up’. More development; more service; more creativity; more focus; more market awareness; more to enthuse and inspire their people.

Now is the time to take a very honest look at your company: are you the best? Are you delivering the best? Do you have the best people working for you? It’s time to do a health check:

Talent Management Conference 2009

As you may know already, I make a point of attending this conference every year because it’s not only a good insight into the latest thinking from many of the corporate organisations; it’s also an excellent source of sound-bites and good stories. If I were to mention every speaker this would be a very long update, so will just highlight some of the most interesting.

Mind the leadership gap

We like this article found on the Talent Foundation website and thought you might too.

Given that it isn't exactly creeping up unannounced, you'd have thought the departure of the Baby Boomer generation of leaders over the next few years would be something relatively easily planned for. Yet many U.S firms still predict that a leadership vacuum within their top echelons will be almost inevitable.

According to a study by training and organisational development firm CPP, there is a marked lack of urgency among many U.S firms about how to respond to the looming departure of this highly skilled and experienced generation of managers.

The war to keep top talent remains a priority for most organisations

We like this article we found in The Grapvine Magazine and thought you might too.

A new piece of research published by the Chartered Institute for Personnel and Development (CIPD) has discovered that despite the economic crisis 74% of employers have not changed their talent strategy.

705 employers were involved in the research, and only 26% have revisited and changed their talent strategy as a result of the current economic crisis. Nearly one in five (18%) are actually placing more emphasis on identifying, developing and retaining talent.

Seven steps to riding out the downturn

We like this article we found on Management Issues, and thought you might too.

Worried about how you are going to manage your way through the downturn? You could do a lot worse than following a seven-step "resiliency strategy" drawn up by a U.S research firm.

The recommendations by Sirota Survey Intelligence are focused on effective people management at all levels, with the aim of ensuring that the business, and its people, are best placed to deal with whatever economic knocks may come their way.

The first of these seven steps is simply to develop and engender a "partnership culture" within your business.

Companies with this culture generally outperformed those with a more confrontational, command and control culture, during both boom-times and downturns, argued Sirota.

Train and Upskill your staff

We like this article written by HRreview

Employers need to avoid a situation where they have made redundancies in a recession and are left with an untrained workforce once the economic situation improves.

That is the warning issued by Claire Steiner, chair of education and training at the Institute of Travel & Tourism. She said that companies would be wise to invest in their existing staff and up skill them so that they are able to work across more than one sector.
