The talent pool - enough of the elitism

Jane Sunley on the misguided use and abuse of 'talent pools'.

I was sitting around the table with a dozen HR directors* at a breakfast debate about talent management when the discussion turned to talent pools.

People started to describe how they selected their talent pools and the development this elite group of people would have available to them as they fast-tracked their way to the top. Now although you could consider me an expert in people matters and a specialist in talent management, I'm not an HRD by background and this causes me to question some of the conventions from time to time.

Surely your whole workforce is a talent pool?!

What does diversity mean to your organisation?

One of their statistics really made me sit up and think: "By 2011 only 20% of the workforce will be white, male, able bodied and under 45... and 2011 is less than 18 months away...

Opinion: unless handled well, the tendering process can prevent companies achieving the best from their suppliers

A couple of weeks ago an invitation to tender for a leadership programme turned up on the desk of one of our business development managers. Now, even in these challenging times when you might think we'd be rushing to secure very piece of business we can, we decided to stick to our policy of never entering into a tendering process unless we have prior knowledge of the client, their business challenges and circumstance and fully understand their objectives from the exercise.
