Career choice in challenging climates
Helen Flint looks at recruitment opportunities and how best to realise them
As we enter uncharted waters as far the economic climate is concerned, the impact on us will differ from person to person. One thing for sure is that we are all starting to re-evaluate the way we view things in all aspect of our lives. With so much uncertainty now regarding job security, many people who may have considered making a job move this year might decide to stay put now. Sadly, some people may lose their jobs, or have done so already.
Therefore it's vital that those people who are enjoying gainful employment make a continued effort to make themselves as indispensable as possible. This can be achieved in many ways and a good starting point is to adopt the right attitude and being willing to be flexible.

A time to think

I recently went to a lecture given by Nancy Kline, author of 'Time to Think'. I'd heard a lot of fellow coaches rave about her book but hadn't quite got around to reading it myself, so being auditory and low-read, I thought I'd go along and hear what she had to say.
I'm so glad that I made the effort as it was well worth every minute and at just £10, worth much more than every penny too. Nancy is one of the most impressive speakers I've seen in a long time, and for many of the characteristics that are seldom admired now. Many speakers make the mistake of letting their egos get the better of them, rejoicing in the sound of their own voice. Sometimes forgetting to focus on the quality of what they have to say and the importance of engaging their audience throughout. Nancy did all of this and more, and in manner that was humble, yet still impressive.

Life coach - a play

Last week I dragged my fiance along to see the stage performance of Nick Reed's new play 'Life Coach' at Trafalgar Studios starring Phill Jupitus and Amy Darcy. We'd read good reviews on the play and weren't quite sure what to expect - it's about 'finding piece of mind when you hadn't realised you'd lost it in the first place.' The theatre is intimate, seating 100 (on seats made for two, so perhaps not go with your accountant) and we were literally two metres from the stage.
